The number one place for researchers to discuss their work, make a blog, post their problems, upload their CV, look for jobs and sell their products – the SunnyLab community! This week the community section of our daughter site SunnyLab goes live. The community has some great features which you can read about here or go straight over to the community and check it out for yourselves!

The community Forum

At the SunnyLab forum you can post about anything you like. Whether it is a problem you are having with your research or new music you are listening to, anything and everything is welcome. You can add images, videos and public polls to you post, so to start the discussions just head to the forum.

Your Personal Blog

At SunnyLab you can create you very own blog to keep all you friends and colleagues up to date with the work you are doing. They can even subscribe to your blog, so they know as soon as you post a new entry. The SunnyLab community blogs feature lets you easily add text, links, images, videos, documents, smiles and quotations. Your blog posts can even be listed in Google search results, so why not introduce yourself and start your own blog now.

Research Articles

If you have something interesting to share with the community, why not write an article about it? Some of the best articles will be added to the community homepage.

Jobs

If there is a vacancy at your company or institution, SunnyLab allows you to advertise this on the site to all the life science members. This is a great way to attract a wide range of professionals within the life science sector. If you are currently looking for employment, you can upload your CV and tell the community a little bit about yourself.

Sell your products

Research departments can sell their own manufactured products via the SunnyLab site and be rewarded with 45% of the selling price. All you have to do is send us some information about your product, and we will arrange everything else for you. The profits made will go back to your research department and will give you some great exposure. If you have something you wish to sell, let us know via the community sales section.

SunnyLab Website Launched

This month sees the launch of a great new ecommerce website for the scientific industry. SunnyLab is a brand new website supplying purified human antigens, serum, plasma and cell culture reagents to the diagnostic industry. The site boasts an impressive range of products, all of which can be ordered directly online, paid for by credit card and delivered within one week.

Following in the footsteps of her father, Holly Raeside decided to develop SunnyLab two years ago, with the aim of offering the same great services of Scipac to research and development scientist in the academic and industrial fields of medical diagnostics. After two years of hard work SunnyLab finally arrived with a great website enabling direct online purchasing, a secure credit card system, guaranteed delivery times of just one week all over the world, and knowledgeable customer services.

Holly Raeside and Barry Clarke make up the SunnyLab team. Barry has been working in the diagnostics industry for many years, in a range of roles including medical research and development and sales and marketing. He brings great experience to the SunnyLab team, and is a font of knowledge. After graduating in biomedical sciences, Holly gained experience in the shipping of biological samples, later moving on to the sale of diagnostic reagents across the world. Moving into the future, Barry and Holly have brought together the skills and expertise needed to offer a modern, convenient and speedy service to the industry.

Over the next year SunnyLab will also be launching a novel community for researchers and students to discuss the projects they are working on, post any problems they may having and post their CV’s after graduating. A continually updated forum in this industry will let researchers as well as manufacturing companies keep up to date on novel markers and help develop new diagnostic methods. Keep an eye out for this, launching in the first half of 2010.

Prostate Specific Antigen – Featured Product

Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is an important protein predominantly utilized in the diagnosis and monitoring of prostate cancer. It is a 34 kDa glycoprotein produced by the cells of the prostate glands which exists in three different forms; Free PSA, PSA-ACT and PSA-A2M.

In men, serum prostate specific antigen levels are generally low, however become elevated in patients with prostate cancer. This makes the prostate specific antigen test one of the most effective methods of detecting prostate cancer in the early stages. However this test may give false positives in the case of prostate infection, inflammation and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). For a more accurate diagnosis, the serum ratio of total PSA to free PSA can be analysed. A lower ratio gives an earlier indication of prostate cancer.

PSA has received a lot of attention within research communities lately, specifically looking at the use of PSA velocity in diagnosis. Early research suggested that the rate of increase of serum PSA levels has greater clinical significance than traditional PSA analysis, however novel research this year by Andrew. J. Vickers et.al. amongst others, has suggested that this is not the case.

A study published this month in the American Society for Radiation Oncology journal suggests that PSA levels post treatment can also be used to predict long-term survival rates.

Medica Trade Show 2009

This year Scipac have had another great year at the Medica trade show in Düsseldorf , Germany. We had the opportunity to meet with a huge number of our customers as well as taking a bit of time to look around at the new stands popping up.

This year we have expanded our range of antibodies, which turned out to be very popular. Along with this, Scipac HbA1c control solutions also recieved alot of attention, with litrature flying off the shelves. And, as always our range of native and recombinant proteins were recieved really well.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by to see us, we had a great time and look forward to seeing everyone again next year!

Cystatin C – Featured Product

Cystatin C

Human Cystatin C is a low molecular weight cysteine proteinase inhibitor of 13kDa, which is produced at a constant rate in all nucleated cells of the body. It is cleared from the body through the kidneys and has concentrations proportional to the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Traditionally creatinine has been used as a marker for kidney function, however this test is greatly influenced by age, gender, race, physical activity, diet and disease. The creatinine clearance test is also costly and inconvenient. Numerous clinical studies have shown that the Cystatin C test has high sensitivity and shows greater standardization across trial groups. This makes Cystatin C assay ideal for this purpose.

Recent research Urban Alehagen et.al. has also linked Cystatin C to the prediction of cardiovascular mortality in elderly patients with heart failure.

Last friday everyone dressed in pink in aid of breast cancer research in the UK, even the guys! Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. Their work has helped millions of people fight back against cancer, and they make scientific progress in this fight every day.

Innovation in Business Award goes to Scipac

This year, Scipac were priveledged to be nominated for the Swale business Award, a prestigious event within the local area, celebrating expanding businesses. The awards took place at the Woodstock Club in Sittingbourne, right next door to the Scipac site. Competition was fierce with a great range of business making it into the final twelve nominees. A number of awards were up for grabs on the night; Innovation in Business Award and the Best Small Business Award and Swale Business Award 2009.

The evening started with presentations to celebrate local junor athletes, and continued into the night with a fantastic meal and pleanty of socializing. Attending the night from the Scipac team were Stephane, Barry and Lesley, who were extremely excited when Scipac was announced the winner of the Innovation in Business Award. Other winners included The Julie Gamble Skin care Centre, winning the Best Small Business Award and Go Response Limited winning the Swale Business Award 2009.

Launching a new range of antibodies

Scipac clients have often come to us with requests for antibodies to match our antigens, and we have responded with a diverse range of both monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies.

With more requests reaching us every day, we have decided to start a brand new project sourcing a more diverse range of high quality antibodies. This new range will include a wider range of clones, with detailed analysis.
